In lieu of the December monthly meeting the Stonewall Democrats of Austin will be joining with the Travis County Democratic Party and other local Democratic clubs at a Holiday Party. When: Tuesday, December 4, 5:30pm - 7:30pm Where: Texas AFL-CIO (1106 Lavaca Street) http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Texas%20AFL-CIO Description: Join the Capital Area Progressive Democrats, the South Austin Democrats, the North by Northwest Democrats, the Stonewall Democrats of Austin, and the Travis County Democratic Party for their holiday party. This year, the holiday party will have a charity drive for The Trinity Center, a homeless shelter. Trinity Center's simple wish list: jackets or sweatshirts (L and XL), knit hats and gloves, socks, blankets and new or gently used sleeping bags. Don't have time to shop? Just make out a check to Trinity Center. Donations are tax-deductible; small amounts go a very long way! Gifts can be dropped off at the TCDP office or brought to the party. Trinity Center is a small-budget charity (501(c)3 but housed in St. David's Episcopal Church basement) launched with funds from the Barbara Jordan Foundation and with the guiding hands of longtime Democratic activists Diana and Doug Bell. The Center provides breakfast, clothing, computer training, counseling, social services and other basic services to thousands of Austin's downtown homeless people every year. Homeless people can use the Center as their mailing address and have access to email and phone service. In response to the brutal murders of several homeless women, Trinity has recently spearheaded a rotating venue among several downtown venues to host 50 women for "safe sleep" each night. |
